PIAZZOLLA The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 for Violin, Flute, Oboe, and Trumpet

  • Astor Piazzolla revolutionized the traditional Argentine tango by incorporating elements of jazz and classical music in works such as his tango-based Four Seasons of Buenos Aires for violin and orchestra.
  • The Second of Bach’s well-known set of Brandenburg Concertos is a brilliant and challenging work that features four solo instruments: violin, flute, oboe, and trumpet.

Violinist and conductor David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1999, performs as soloist with the orchestra each year. Recent career highlights include a visiting professorship at the University of Texas, a return as concertmaster of the All-Star Orchestra in New York City and on PBS stations across the USA, and recitals and solo appearances in the United States and Korea.

A prolific performer and distinguished educator, John Dee, Professor of Oboe at the University of Illinois, was principal oboe of the Florida Philharmonic and Florida Grand Opera for more than twenty years.  In addition to working with conductors including Carlo Maria Giulini, Claudio Abbado, Georg Solti, and James Levine, he has collaborated with artists ranging from Cecilia Bartoli and Yo-Yo Ma to Frank Sinatra and Wynton Marsalis.

"A Tribute to the Masters"

Misha Dichter, Piano Soloist

BEETHOVEN Coriolan Overture, op. 62
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, op. 15
IVES The Unanswered Question
MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 4 in A major, op. 90, “Italian”

  • Mendelssohn spent more than a year in Italy and said that the people, the historic cities, the great works of art, and the beautiful scenery provided the stimulation for his “Italian” Symphony, which he described as the “jolliest piece” he had ever written.
  • Beethoven’s C major Piano Concerto is also a cheerful work, and its boisterous finale is filled with surprises.

Internationally recognized for his moving performances, innovative programming, and extensive catalog of recordings, conductor Gerard Schwarz serves as Music Director of the All Star Orchestra and the Eastern Music Festival and as Conductor Laureate of the Seattle Symphony. He has held leadership positions with the Mostly Mozart Festival, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and New York Chamber Symphony.

Pianist Misha Dichter, now in the fifth decade of his illustrious career, has appeared with virtually all of the world’s major orchestras. His critically-acclaimed recordings for Philips, RCA, MusicMasters, and Koch Classics illustrate the wide scope of his musical interests, which range from Mozart to Gershwin. He frequently performs with his wife, Cipa Dichter, in duo-piano recitals and concertos.
